Neurovascular Interventions
Endovascular treatment of brain and neck vessel diseases — ischaemic stroke, carotid stenosis and brain aneurysm.
The neurovascular unit covers endovascular treatment of diseases of the vessels supplying the brain — ischaemic stroke, carotid artery stenosis and brain aneurysm. Interventions are performed from inside the vessel, by catheter, without open surgery.
When to refer to this unit
- Ischaemic stroke — emergency stroke protocol, thrombolysis within a suitable time window, mechanical thrombectomy in selected cases
- Carotid artery stenosis — medical, surgical or endovascular approach based on Doppler and CT/MR angiography
- Brain aneurysm — observation, coil embolisation or stent-assisted treatment in selected cases
Diagnostics
Before treatment, the vessels are assessed with emergency CT or MRI, Doppler ultrasound and CT/MR angiography. A patient with suspected stroke is referred for emergency neurological and vascular assessment.
