Carotid Artery Stenosis — Stenting

Carotid Artery Stenosis — Stenting

Narrowing of the carotid artery, which carries blood to the brain, is most often caused by atherosclerosis; sometimes it causes no symptoms, and sometimes it presents as a transient ischaemic attack or stroke. Risk is determined by the degree of narrowing, the structure of the atherosclerotic plaque and the symptoms. Based on Doppler ultrasound and CT/MR angiography, medical, surgical or endovascular treatment is discussed.

  • Risk-factor control, antiplatelet and cholesterol-lowering medication
  • Referral for carotid endarterectomy in selected cases
  • Carotid artery stenting in selected cases
