Brain Aneurysm — Endovascular Coil Embolisation
Invasive procedure
Brain Aneurysm — Endovascular Coil Embolisation
A brain aneurysm is a localised bulge of an artery wall caused by its weakening (saccular, fusiform). If it ruptures, subarachnoid haemorrhage may occur. In endovascular treatment, a catheter is advanced to the brain arteries through a small access in the groin, and the aneurysm (or an arteriovenous fistula) is packed from within with coils and isolated from the circulation. The intervention is performed under local or general anaesthesia.
- Observation and periodic imaging
- Coil embolisation or stent-assisted treatment in selected cases
- Referral for neurosurgical clipping in selected cases
