Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UAE)
Invasive procedure
Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UAE)
UAE is an intervention that requires no surgical incision and is performed under local anaesthesia. The femoral artery is accessed through a small puncture in the groin, embolic particles are delivered through thin catheters into the arteries feeding the fibroid, and the blood supply to the nodules stops. As a result of subsequent resorption, the nodules shrink.
- Suitability is determined by gynaecological and interventional radiology assessment
- The fibroid type, severity of bleeding and reproductive plans are taken into account
- In selected cases it may also be used for uterine bleeding
