Nephrostomy

A nephrostomy is needed to protect the kidney when hydronephrosis develops due to obstruction of the urinary tract or impaired urine flow. A nephrostomy is a procedure to drain urine from the kidney through a catheter placed through the skin and to reduce pressure inside the kidney. It is performed without open surgery, under ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance, with local anaesthesia.

  • When there is infection or impaired kidney function due to obstruction
  • When urine flow needs to be restored before oncological treatment
