Biopsy

Biopsy

A method of obtaining a tissue sample with a needle under imaging guidance. In this way a biopsy can be taken without an incision from many organs such as the liver, breast, lymph nodes and prostate. The samples are sent for histopathological or cytological examination, which makes it possible to determine whether a lesion is benign or malignant.

  • Performed under ultrasound, CT or MRI guidance
  • Fine-needle aspiration or core-needle (trephine) biopsy is performed
  • Mainly under local anaesthesia, with sedation when needed
