Renal Artery Stenosis

Narrowing or occlusion of the renal artery is examined first with colour Doppler ultrasound and additionally with MR or CT angiography. In most cases, medical treatment is the mainstay. When intervention is required, balloon angioplasty is used in fibromuscular dysplasia, stenting in selected atherosclerotic cases and, rarely, surgery.

• Uncontrolled arterial hypertension or worsening kidney function
• Stenosis confirmed by colour Doppler, CT or MR angiography
• The decision to intervene is made jointly by the nephrologist and the interventional radiologist
