EVAR — Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

An aortic aneurysm is a localised dilation of a segment of the aorta and is often found incidentally during an examination. The risk of rupture relates to the aneurysm's diameter, growth rate and location. In EVAR, an abdominal aortic aneurysm is treated without open surgery, from inside the vessel, by placing a special stent graft: the stent graft is introduced by catheter through the groin arteries and isolates the aneurysm from the blood flow.

• Aneurysms above a certain size, growing rapidly or causing symptoms
• The abdomen is not opened
• The choice between EVAR and open surgical repair is discussed by the vascular team based on CT angiography
• Regular follow-up with CT or ultrasound is important after EVAR
