Doppler Ultrasound

What is Doppler ultrasound

Doppler ultrasound is an ultrasound-based diagnostic method used to assess the speed, direction, and pattern of blood flow in arteries and veins. Unlike standard ultrasound imaging, Doppler technology displays the movement of blood within a vessel in real time. The examination is entirely non-invasive and painless — it is performed using an ultrasound probe applied to the surface of the skin, with no needles or incisions required.

Why it is performed

Doppler ultrasound is used to evaluate the functional condition of the vascular system. Main indications include:

  • Vessel narrowing (stenosis) — identifying narrowing of the artery wall caused by atherosclerosis
  • Vessel blockage — detecting partial or complete interruption of blood flow
  • Deep or superficial vein thrombosis — diagnosing clot formation within the veins
  • Venous insufficiency — assessing backward blood flow caused by malfunctioning vein valves

The examination can be performed on vessels in the limbs, the neck (carotid arteries), and other areas of the body.

How it is performed

During the examination, the patient lies in a comfortable position, a special gel is applied to the area being examined, and an ultrasound probe is moved across the skin. The process is fully comfortable and painless, and no recovery period is required. The duration of the examination may vary depending on the vascular area being assessed.

Who may be advised to have it

Doppler ultrasound may be recommended for individuals experiencing limb pain, swelling, a feeling of heaviness, changes in skin color, wounds that do not heal, or varicose veins, as well as for patients with risk factors for vascular disease (smoking, hypertension, prolonged standing or sitting work, family history).

Preparation

Doppler ultrasound generally requires minimal special preparation. Depending on the area being examined, the physician may provide additional instructions, but patients can typically continue their normal daily routine.

Results

The results of the examination are evaluated by the physician and, based on the blood flow parameters, provide information about the condition of the vascular system. Depending on the findings, further evaluation or a treatment approach may be determined.
