Deep Vein Thrombosis

Formation of a blood clot (thrombus) in the deep veins, mainly in the leg veins; the main danger is that the clot breaks off and travels to the pulmonary arteries. The location and age of the thrombus and the risk of embolism are assessed, and treatment is chosen individually according to the bleeding risk.

• Anticoagulant therapy and, in selected cases, compression therapy
• Catheter-directed thrombolysis or thrombectomy in extensive proximal (iliofemoral) thrombosis
