TAVI — Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

In aortic stenosis, the narrowed and calcified aortic valve is replaced with a new biological valve via a catheter, without open-heart surgery. The valve, crimped on a metal frame, is delivered to the heart through the blood vessels, mainly via the femoral artery, and under X-ray angiographic guidance is expanded inside the old valve, taking over its function. The chest is not opened and a heart-lung machine is not required.

• Symptomatic severe aortic stenosis
• Elderly patients or those at increased surgical risk
• The decision is made by the cardiologist and the heart team based on CT and echocardiography
