Stress test

What it is

A stress test (exercise ECG) is a non-invasive diagnostic examination that evaluates how the heart works during physical activity. Under a physician's supervision, the patient walks on a treadmill or pedals a stationary bike at gradually increasing intensity while the ECG, heart rhythm, and blood pressure are continuously monitored.

Why it is performed

Some changes are not visible while the heart is at rest and appear only under load. A stress test helps assess whether coronary blood flow is sufficient, detect rhythm disturbances during exertion, clarify the cause of symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath), and determine the heart's functional capacity.

How it is performed

ECG electrodes are placed on the chest and blood pressure is measured. The patient exercises on a treadmill or bike at gradually increasing intensity while the physician and medical staff monitor throughout. The test is stopped when the target heart rate is reached, symptoms appear, or ECG changes are observed, after which the readings continue to be tracked during the recovery period.

Who may be recommended this examination

A physician may recommend it for patients with chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue or palpitations on exertion, suspected coronary artery disease, or a need to assess cardiovascular risk. The final decision on the suitability and safety of the test is made by a cardiologist, taking the patient's condition into account.

Preparation

It is recommended to come in comfortable sportswear and shoes. Before the test, it is advisable to avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and smoking. It is important to inform the physician in advance about any medications, as some may affect the result. Specific instructions are provided individually by the physician.

Results and safety

The results are interpreted by a cardiologist and used to determine further examination or treatment. The test is performed under medical supervision in a setting equipped for emergency care and is generally considered safe; in rare cases, rhythm disturbances or other changes may occur during exertion, in which case the test is stopped immediately.
