Oesophageal Variceal Band Ligation

In liver cirrhosis, increased portal pressure produces varicose veins in the lower oesophagus; their rupture causes life-threatening bleeding. Using a transparent cap on the tip of the endoscope, an elastic band is placed at the base of the varix, the vein is tied off and is absorbed over time. The method is used to stop active bleeding and to prevent rebleeding.

• Emergency haemostasis in active variceal bleeding
• Secondary prevention after a previous bleed (repeat sessions)
• Primary prevention in high-risk varices
