ERCP — Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

ERCP combines endoscopic examination and treatment of the bile and pancreatic ducts. A side-viewing endoscope is passed through the mouth to the duodenum, a cannula is introduced into the bile duct through the major papilla and fluoroscopic images are obtained with contrast. A detected obstruction is removed in the same session — no surgical incision is needed. The procedure is performed under sedation or general anaesthesia.
