Scheduled Check-up: When and Why?

Many cardiovascular conditions develop silently for years. A person can feel perfectly healthy while atherosclerotic changes slowly build up in the vessels, or blood pressure gradually rises. A planned check-up exists precisely to catch problems during this "silent" period — before symptoms force the issue.

What is a check-up, and why does it matter?

A check-up is a set of planned medical examinations carried out without a specific complaint. Its purpose is not to treat disease but to catch risks early. Hypertension, elevated cholesterol, or a heart rhythm irregularity found at an early stage can usually be managed more simply, reducing the chance of serious complications such as heart attack or stroke.

When should you consider a check-up?

It is worth not delaying a planned examination if:

  • You are getting older (especially past age 40), when cardiovascular risk naturally rises;
  • There is a family history of early heart attack, stroke, or heart disease;
  • Risk factors are present — smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, excess weight;
  • You have diabetes or other chronic conditions;
  • You occasionally notice unexplained fatigue, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations — even if they don't seem serious.

What can a cardiovascular check-up include?

The exact examination plan is determined individually by the physician, based on age, symptoms, and risk factors. In general, it may include:

  • A cardiologist consultation and blood pressure measurement;
  • An ECG (electrocardiogram) — assessing the heart's electrical activity;
  • Echocardiography (heart ultrasound) — a visual assessment of structure and function;
  • Laboratory tests, including cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

In some cases, the physician may order additional tests, such as a vascular ultrasound.

How often should a check-up be done?

This varies from person to person, depending on age, existing risk factors, and previous results. Only a physician can give a precise recommendation after reviewing your personal history.
